Convoy Celebrating First Woman Voter Arrives in Denver Thursday

September 1, 2020

Cross-Country Journey Will Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Louisa Swain’s Historic, First-in-Nation Vote

Laramie, WY – To recognize the 150th anniversary of America’s first woman voter, American Trucking Association is partnering with the Louisa Swain Foundation and the Wyoming Office of Tourism on a special initiative: The Louisa Swain Convoy.

On Monday, August 31, a tractor-trailer dedicated to Louisa Swain departed from the U.S. Capitol on a week-long, cross-country journey. The final destination is Laramie, Wyoming, where Louisa Swain made history 150 years ago as the first woman in America to cast a ballot, under a Wyoming law giving women full and equal civil rights with men.

Leading the Convoy are four female professional truck drivers, who will make stops at historical milestones and national landmarks along the way. The truck picked up The Awakening – a historical illustration depicting the genesis of the women’s suffrage movement that was previously held at the Library of Congress – and will deliver it to the Louisa Swain Foundation upon arrival in Laramie. The stop in Denver recognizes the importance western states played in advancing voting rights for women, with Colorado being the second state to allow women to vote in 1893.  The truck will be welcomed by the Colorado Motor Carriers Association.

The Convoy culminates in Laramie on September 6 -- the 150th anniversary of the vote -- with a re-enactment and celebration at the Louisa Swain Foundation’s History House.
